The COVID-19 outbreak has spurred many researchers and clinicians into action. The pace at which they’ve mobilized is inspiring. It has led to the publication of many news articles, think pieces, and research papers. Yet, these rapid developments can make it difficult to get a good grasp on everything that’s happening. To make it easier, we’ve compiled the list of COVID-19 resources found below. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Instead it can be a starting point for further research on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the COVID-19 disease.
Resources providing a general overview of the COVID-19 outbreak
Before you get into the nitty gritty of COVID-19, it’s good to get a broad overview of the disease and how it might affect you. The organizations behind the resources in this section provide approachable disease information to the general public. Thus, their resource pages are great places to build the foundations of your COVID-19 knowledge.
The World Health Organization’s COVID-19 resource page
The World Health Organization (WHO) has compiled a broad array of resources covering the basics of COVID-19. They also have information on protective measures, research publications, and more.
The US Centers for Disease Control’s COVID-19 resource page
Similar to the WHO’s page but with a focus on the U.S. You can find basic information on COVID-19, how it spreads, how to protect yourself, and travel recommendations. There is also information for specific groups of people such as healthcare professionals.
The American Society for Microbiology’s Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Resources
The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) provides curated research, protocols, FAQs, and infographics covering COVID-19.
COVID-19 Real-Time Learning Network
This website is a collaboration between the Infectious Disease Society of America, the US Center for Disease Control, and other organizations. It provides expert-curated information on a wide variety of topics including COVID-19 therapeutics, diagnostics, and research literature, and more.
Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center
This page provides up-to-date tallies on coronavirus cases and deaths – both globally and in U.S. You can follow trends in coronavirus cases and find information on testing, vaccines, and more.
News articles on the COVID-19 outbreak
Once you’ve got the basics down, you can dive into some of the great news coverage on COVID-19. Many outlets have pages dedicated to coronavirus news and often provide their coronavirus coverage free of charge. Five of the author’s (Tyler Ford’s) most read outlets are listed below, but there are many more.
New York Times Coronavirus Coverage
This page provides a stream of news articles surrounding the outbreak. On this page you’ll also find links to interactive case trackers, regular updates on vaccines, and FAQs.
Stat News: Coronavirus Topic Page
Compilation of health, biotech, and research-focused articles updated regularly. Stat articles usually focus more on the science behind the headlines than other popular news outlets.
Nature: COVID-19 News Updates
A feed of Nature News updates on the COVID-19 outbreak and its spread.
Science Coronavirus Page
A feed containing coronavirus news articles, scientific perspectives, and research articles from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
COVID-19 research articles
If you’ve got the time to dive even deeper, scientists are well at work learning how the SARS-CoV-2 virus works and developing ways to fight it. You’ll need some research background to approach these articles, but they’ll give you a detailed understanding of how the virus infects people and how we can prevent future infections. A deep dive into these articles will also show what knowledge gaps we need to fill to better fight the disease. Keep in mind that much of the research in this area is preliminary and subject to refinement.
Rather than point you to specific articles (there are many!), below you’ll find links to curated lists of coronavirus research publications.
American Society for Microbiology (ASM) COVID-19 Research Registry
WHO database of publications on the COVID-19 outbreak
